Located in the southern part of China, Wuzhou has a rich history dating back to when foreign trade opened its doors in 1897. This period of economic growth attracted numerous entrepreneurs who established a unique architectural legacy in the city - stepped trade and residence complexes. These structures are not just buildings, but they bear witness to the city's resilient past.

One distinctive feature of these terraced buildings is the presence of iron rings and iron water gates adorning their walls. These elements serve as a tangible reminder of the city's past struggles with floods. During times of flood, the iron rings acted as mooring points for boats, while the water gates provided a means for residents to enter and exit their homes safely, navigating the rising waters.

The iron ring and iron water gate are not just functional, but they also hold cultural significance, telling the story of how Wuzhou's residents adapted and persevered in the face of adversity. They symbolize the city's resilience and the ingenuity of its people, who ingeniously incorporated these elements into their daily lives and architecture.
