Be good to yourself, be good to your economy, be good to your world: say yes to locally grown produce.

Globalization has brought us everything from everywhere, for better or for worse. Most of the produce you find any grocery store is now produced hundreds of miles away. The next time you stop by any grocery store, when faced the Californian oranges, Mexican Papayas, Italian grapes and Brazilian lettuce, walk past them and look for your locally-grown fruits and vegetables.

Compared to foods packed in crates and shipped cross states, even countries, local fruits and vegetables are doubtless more fresh and more reliable. You can be sure that no extra 'processing' was done to your foods. Furthermore, if you shop at any local farmer's market, you can meet the farmers personally, most of them would be more than willing to tell you how and where their foods were grown. What can be more important that knowing what goes inside your own body? Avoid pesticides and insecticides, shop local.

Choosing local produce also helps your local economy. In the traditional grocery store, large international chains purchase food products directly from farmers who mass-produce fruit and vegetables through the overuse of pesticides fertilizer, at a much discounted price, then sell them for profit, which are then invested internationally. From the perspective of the local economy, food is imported, money exits the economy, but is not cycled back. On the other hand, any purchase you make to a local farmer is likely spent locally, on your uncle's skating rink maybe, or the lemonade stand your neighbor's kid is running. When money is kept in an economy, it benefits everyone in that economy.

Purchase of local produce benefits you, your friend and your family, and avoids the tons of smoke produced in transporting these fruits and vegetables for long distances. Choose the smart way, buy local.
