如何区分后置分词短语做状语还是定语

后置的分词短语如果是修饰名词性的词，那么分词短语就是做定语；如果修饰动词，就是后置状语。
作定语
the girl standing beside me is my girlfriend.
the man selected as the principal is my uncle.
作状语
There was a terrible noise following the sudden burst of light.
the train looks like a snake seen from the top of the hill.
He came running back to tell me the news.
Given more attention，the trees could have grown better.
An old man entered, supported by a girl.
