June 12 is Russia's National Day, also known as Russia day. The origins of Russia day date back to the 1990s. On June 12, 1990, the first people's congress of the Russian federation, then a Soviet republic, adopted a declaration of Russian state sovereignty.
Russia, the largest republic of the Soviet union, declared that the process of Soviet disintegration was irreversible. On the same day the following year, the Russian people elected yeltsin as the first President of the Russian federation.
At the end of the same year, the Soviet union collapsed, and on December 25, Russia began to use a new name: Russian federation (Russia).
Since 1994, June 12 has been commemorated by russians as the date of adoption of the declaration of state sovereignty. In 2002, it was determined as "Russia day" and written into Russia's new labor law. Since then, russians have had one more day off.
