Brzezinka, with its bright sun and dancing poplars, green grass, and children's laughter, seems frighteningly out of place. This is a nightmare where everything is somehow wrong, as the sun should never shine, there should be no light, no greenery, and no sound of young joy, because this is a place of unimaginable terror.
Oświęcim is a city in southern Poland, about 171 miles from Warsaw, located at the eastern end of the Moravian Gate pass, surrounded by marshland. Brzezinka and Oświęcim together formed part of the meticulously organized factory of torture and death that the Nazis called the Auschwitz concentration camp.
Fourteen years ago, the last batch of prisoners was herded naked into the gas chambers by dogs and guards. The story of Auschwitz has been told many times. Some inmates' memoirs, which detail scenes unimaginable to sane minds, have been published. Before he was executed, Rudolf Franz Ferdinand Hoess, the camp's superintendent, wrote detailed memoirs about mass exterminations and experiments on living bodies. According to the Poles, 4 million people died here.
Now, Brzezinka and Oświęcim are very quiet places; the screams can no longer be heard. The tourists walk silently, their steps dragging, knowing that there is one particular moment of horror that they will never forget. A guide does not need to say much because there is nothing left to see after pointing. For every visitor, there is one particular bit of horror that they know they will never forget.
Visitors to Auschwitz notice certain places that stand out. For some, it is the reconstructed gas chambers at Oświęcim, and for others, it is the daisies growing in the ruins of the gas chambers and crematoria at Brzezinka. There are also visitors who see shocking scenes, such as the three-tiered wooden boxes in the women's barracks, where five to ten prisoners were squeezed in for the night. A brick building where sterilization experiments were carried out on women prisoners is also visited, the door locked, leaving the visitor feeling ashamed. In the long corridor, rows of faces stare from the walls, pictures of prisoners, all dead, smiling gently, as if at a sweet, treasured thought.
There is no place to pray in Auschwitz. The visitors feel their breaths become heavy in this unsettling and sorrowful place, their hearts heavy with grief. They know that this was once a place of hell on earth, a history that cannot be forgotten.
There is nothing new to report about Auschwitz. The compulsion to write something about it stems from a restless feeling that if one visits Auschwitz and then turns away without having said or written anything, it would somehow be a most grievous act of discourtesy to those who died here.
