一个托福英语语法问题

1、句中的 chance 表示“运气、机缘、侥幸”，即认为是预先决定了的不可避免的力量，和luck、fate、fortune 同义，属于抽象名词，不可数，不能用冠词或复数形式。

it was largely chance that determined which species survived and which died out 的结构为——

主句：it was largely chance 这种情况在很大程度上是运气/气数。（it 是非人称代词语，指代情况，副词 largely 是状语）

定语从句：that determined which species survived and which died out. 这种机遇决定哪些物种幸存哪些物种灭绝，

整个句子的意思是“仅有0.1的在地球继续活着物种至今幸存下来，这种情况在很大程度上是决定哪些物种幸存哪些物种灭绝的运气”。

另如——

* Let chance decide. 凭运气决定吧。

* Chance will determine the outcome. 机缘将决定结果.

2、如果表示“机会、冒险”，属于具体名词，可在前面加冠词a或the，也可以用复数形式，如：

* I took the chance that the ice would hold me. 我甘冒冰层可以承受住我的这种危险。

* There was a chance to escape. 曾有过逃跑的机会。

* We will take the chances. 我们要冒这些风险（抓住这些机会）。

3、复数形式的 chances，常用来表示“可能性、希望、把握”，如：

* Chances are that we will win easily. 我们很可能会轻易取胜（或有取胜的希望/把握）。

* The chances are a hundred to one against you. 你只有百分之一成功的可能（或把握性）。
