“数学界托福”——欧几里得数学竞赛

Euclid Mathematics Contest, organized by the University of Waterloo's Math and Computer Science department, is a globally accessible mathematics competition aimed at students aged below 12th grade. This contest is highly esteemed and recognized, serving as the most valuable and acknowledged competition among Canadian high school students.

Participation is open to students not exceeding 12th grade. The competition lasts for 150 minutes, featuring 10 questions, each worth 10 points, totaling 100 points. It comprises both short-answer and long-answer questions. Short-answer questions require the final answer only, whereas long-answer questions necessitate a complete solution process.

The exam dates are set for April 3rd in the Americas and April 4th in the international region. The deadline for registration is March 7th, 2024. The University of Waterloo's official website provides these details.

Noteworthy, the Euclid Mathematics Contest is one of the Waterloo Mathematics Series competitions, a series of math contests covering students from grade 7 to 12, all officially recognized by Canada. This series commemorates various scientists and is divided into 13 different competitions.

Here's a breakdown of the Waterloo Mathematics Series:

Comprising contests for grades 7 to 12:

Gauss (Gauss) Math Contest (Grades 7-8)

Pascal (Pascal) Math Contest (Grade 9)

Fryer (Fryer) Math Contest (Grade 9)

Cayley (Cayley) Math Contest (Grade 10)

Galois (Galois) Math Contest (Grade 10)

Fermat (Fermat) Math Contest (Grade 11)

Hypatia (Hypatia) Math Contest (Grade 11)

Euclid (Euclid) Math Contest (Grade 12)

Canadian Intermediate Math Contest (Grades 9-12)

Canadian Advanced Math Contest (Grades 11-12)

Canadian Team Math Contest (Grades 9-12)

Beaver Computing Challenge (Grades 9-10)

Canadian Computing Competition (Grades 9-12)

While the Euclid Math Contest is primarily targeted at Grade 11 and 12 students, other grade students can participate if they meet the requirements and are interested. Students can choose a competition suitable for their current grade from the Waterloo Mathematics Series.

The contest content focuses on nine areas:

Competitive mathematics for Chinese students who are proficient in math and exams tends to be less challenging compared to domestic competitions, but it is more difficult for students studying in Canada.

Results are typically announced by mid-May. The competition committee releases detailed data, including the average scores for each question, the cutoff score for the top 25% certificates (generally around 70 points), and the complete Honor Roll list for students scoring 86 points or higher. This list is crucial for scholarship offers from the University of Waterloo's mathematics department.

Calculator usage is permitted, but only those with simple calculation functions are allowed.

For preparation, students can:

Visit cemc.uwaterloo.ca/conte... for comprehensive information.

Access two question generators on the cemc2.math.uwaterloo.ca... platform, which offers a range of difficulty levels and exam-style questions to help students practice and improve.

Enroll in the online courses offered by the University of Waterloo's mathematics department, which are accessible to students participating in the Euclid Math Contest. These courses cover the 12th-grade curriculum.

Participation in the Euclid Math Contest can significantly enhance your college application, especially when applying to the University of Waterloo's mathematics program. High performers may receive scholarships, gain admission advantages, and receive recognition and certificates based on their rankings.

Personal awards include:

Certificate of Distinction: Issued to students ranking within the top 25% globally.

Contest Medal: Awarded by the CEMC to each school's champion.

Honor Rolls: Students with high scores are listed on regional honor rolls in Canada and internationally.

Plaque: The top 5 students in Canada receive a plaque and a 500 Canadian dollar prize. The next 10 students receive a 200 Canadian dollar prize.

Team awards are available for schools that choose to participate in team results, which are based on the combined scores of the three highest-scoring students.

Note: The top 10%, ideally the top 5%, can receive scholarships from the University of Waterloo. Grading is conducted by second and third-year students from the University of Waterloo's mathematics department.
